What is so special about the paper lid?

The lid is made of a patented special paper, which was engineered to provide a perfect result in the cup:

The paper is designed to withstand the pressure in the capsule during the initial brewing process. As the pressure rises, cracks appear in the paper that offer just enough space for the coffee to be continuously extracted into the cup in an optimum brewing time. The paper lets oils pass through and a beautiful crema is created. It prevents coffee powder from getting into the cup.

A huge advantage of the paper lid is, of course, that the raw material is plant derived and completely compostable. An energy-intensive and thus environmentally more harmful production process such as that used for aluminum is no longer required.
